Filipino artistry, cultural pride shine at Vin d’Honneur

12 June 2025

Under the auspices of First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, Filipino artistry and cultural pride took center stage as the country’s esteemed fashion designers dressed members of the diplomatic corps who attended the Vin d’Honneur reception at Malacañan Palace in celebration of the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence on Thursday.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized that Filipino culture is a source of national pride and a vital pillar of development, underscoring the connection between cultural preservation, economic growth, and social progress.

Designers Avel Bacudio, Dennis Lustico, Francis Libiran, Jun Escario, Lulu Tan-Gan, Michael Leyva, and Philip Rodriguez created bespoke pieces for the ambassadors, which showcased the elegance and craftsmanship of Philippine fashion.

Michael Leyva drew deep inspiration from the rich and diverse culture of the Philippines. His creations reflected the vibrant heritage, artistry and history that characterized Filipino identity.

Among the many cultural symbols of the Philippines, the Filipiniana stands out as the most iconic traditional dress. Known for its elegance and unique features, the Filipiniana has long been a symbol of national pride and sophistication.

Leyva pays homage to the beauty of the past but also revitalizes the Filipiniana as a modern cultural expression.

For Cebuano designer Philip Rodriguez, a luxurious silk gazar trumpet gown took center stage, which was distinguished by its piña calado terno sleeves. The upper bodice was accentuated by a dramatic, stylized panuelo crafted from pointe d’esprit fabric, elegantly gathered and secured with an oversized statement brooch, creating a striking focal point which blended tradition with couture sophistication.

Dennis Lustico drew inspiration from the ambassadors’ personality and the country they represent, blending these elements seamlessly with traditional Filipino attire.

“For Ambassador Catherine McIntosh, I was inspired by the summer breeze and vast openness of New Zealand’s vista. I chose a cool mint chiffon and paired it with suksok piña silk of the same shade to compliment her excellency’s young and vibrant aura,” Lustico said.

“The multiracial and rich cultural mix up of unique and modern Singapore inspired me to come up with different textures and patterns all fused into one harmonious look for Ambassador Constance See. The gown is made up of geometric woven silk piña, frayed mikado silk and embellished with crystals and beads,” he pointed out.

Lulu Tan-Gan made a terno gown crafted from a mix of natural textiles: abaca, silk and piña for Hungarian Ambassador Titanilla Tóth.

Tan-Gan said the skirt showcases a sculpted top layer of abaca, draped and twisted over a piña apron to create movement, depth, and texture. A striking final touch: a handcrafted abaca floral brooch in bright cerise, adding a bold pop of color to the elegant moss-gray gown.

For Australian Ambassador Hae Kyong Yu, Libiran said he wanted to create a Filipiniana Terno that reflects the enduring friendship between the Philippines and Australia—a relationship grounded in strength, elegance, and a shared vision for the future.

“I chose crepe de Chine for its fluidity and grace, echoing the ambassador’s poise and diplomatic finesse. The cerulean blue symbolizes the vast waters that unite our nations, and the embroidery is custom-designed to subtly incorporate both native Australian flora and traditional Filipino patterns,” Libiran added.

The structured butterfly sleeves are balanced with soft draping, evoking a powerful yet harmonious silhouette— a homage to empowered women in leadership.

For Romanian Ambassador Raduta Dana Matache, Libiran noted that he was inspired by the refined beauty of diplomacy and cultural connection. The Filipiniana, reimagined in a soft Serenity hue, evokes tranquility and wisdom—qualities he sees in the ambassador’s quiet yet resolute presence.

He said the Dupioni silk lends the ensemble a noble texture, with its natural sheen capturing light in the most delicate way.

“The embroidery intertwines Romanian lace-inspired motifs with Filipino baroque elements, symbolizing the blending of heritage and mutual respect. This piece is both a tribute to timeless femininity and to the bridge between Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia,” Libiran added. | PND

PBBM: Independent foreign policy ‘builds bridges not walls’

12 June 2025

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday reaffirmed the Philippines’ independent foreign policy that aligns with national priorities and promotes international cooperation.

Speaking before foreign dignitaries and government officials on the occasion of the 127th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence, President Marcos said the country’s foreign policy is shaped by its development agenda and guided by principles of sovereignty, peace, and mutual respect.

“Our independent foreign policy is informed by our development goals and reflects our national priorities. Ours is a proactive policy that is true to ourselves and responsive to the needs and aspirations of our people,” President Marcos said, addressing the diplomatic corps during the traditional Vin d’Honneur at Malacañan Palace.

“Our engagements with the world are geared towards building peace and cooperation, and to fostering enduring partnerships. We build bridges not walls. We forge alliances that are based on mutual respect, reciprocity and shared goals,” the President added.

The President emphasized that pursuing an independent foreign policy is not merely constitutional but a deliberate strategy to ensure that the Philippines engages with the world on its own terms, collaborating with nations that share common values and aspirations.

Defense of sovereignty, territorial integrity

In his toast remarks delivered during the Vin d’Honneur reception, President Marcos honored the courage of the Filipino people as he reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to defend national sovereignty while promoting international cooperation.

PBBM says faster GDP growth sign of sustained economic momentum, improved investment climate

12 June 2025

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday said the Philippines economy expects to grow by 6 percent in the next quarters, placing it among the best-performing economies in the ASEAN region.

The Philippines’ gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.4 percent in the first quarter of 2025 despite rising global volatilities.

“We are confident that we will achieve a six percent GDP growth target in the coming quarters, driven by steady fiscal consolidation, easing inflation, and progress in trade negotiations with key partners, among other initiatives,” the President said during the Vin d’Honneur reception in Malacañang as part of the 127th Independence Day celebrations.

“The forecast is supported by the IMF World Economic Outlook in April 2025, which similarly painted a rosy projection for the Philippines to be the fastest-growing economy among ASEAN-5 countries in 2025,” the President told members of the diplomatic corps, Cabinet officials, and business leaders.

President Marcos said the expected GDP growth is a sign of sustained economic momentum with policy reforms and international partnerships as key drivers of the Philippines’ improving investment climate.

The Chief Executive underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to attract both local and foreign investors by enhancing economic policies and streamlining regulatory procedures.

Among the major reforms highlighted were the enactment of the Capital Markets Efficiency Promotion Act (CMEPA) and the CREATE MORE Act, which were designed to provide tax incentives and flexible investment terms aimed at stimulating long-term growth.

The President also said the newly signed directive strengthening coordination among investment facilitation agencies manifests the country’s resolve to seriously end red tape, improve the ease of doing business, and make the Philippines a more attractive destination for investors.

President Marcos also credited the country’s improved standing in the international financial community, including the Philippines’ recent removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) “grey list,” as a signal of renewed investor confidence.

The President also credited these gains in part to close cooperation with diplomatic partners and multilateral institutions, noting that international support remains vital as the Philippines continues its post-pandemic recovery.

“On inflation, I am proud to announce that the inflation rate dropped to 1.3% in May 2025 —which is the lowest since November 2019,” President Marcos noted.

“This is a very encouraging development, not only as it creates a stable and predictable economic environment for businesses, but also because it increases the purchasing power of individuals and of households, especially low-income families,” the President added. | PND

Gensets arrive in Siquijor after PBBM visit; Power to be restored to much of Siquijor by tomorrow

12 June 2025

A day after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. assured the people of Siquijor province of relief from rotational brownouts, a much-needed power generation set arrived on the island.

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) reported that a trailer truck carrying a generator set (genset) from Sta. Rosa, Laguna arrived at 5:59 a.m. on Thursday via MV Martin 7 of Maayo Shipping Lines.

The equipment, with plate number NHE 6226, was transported to the Siquijor Island Power Corp. (SipCor) plant in Barangay Tignao in the municipality of Lazi.

As of 11 a.m., the island’s total available power output stood at 6.9 megawatts (MW), with 6 MW covering off-peak baseload requirements. However, Siquijor’s total peak demand currently reaches 9 MW, leaving a shortfall of 2.1 MW.

The newly arrived SipCor rental genset, with a rated capacity of 1 MW and a dependable capacity of 0.85 MW, is undergoing installation.

Authorities said that if completed within the day, the equipment would bring the island’s total available capacity to 7.75 MW, narrowing the power deficit during peak hours to just 1.25 MW.

On Wednesday, President Marcos flew to Siquijor to personally oversee measures to address the prolonged power disruptions which have lasted for several hours each day.

The President commiserated with residents who have been experiencing prolonged blackouts and severely impacted activities, including the province’s booming tourism sector.

Authorities have assured that brownouts will not occur during off-peak hours. However, limited rotational brownouts may still occur during peak hours at night, lasting about one to two hours.

Meanwhile, the delivery of a separate 2 MW genset from Palawan experienced a delay but is expected to arrive at the Cebu port by 8 p.m. Thursday, June 12.

A landing craft tank (LCT) has already been chartered for transport, with loading expected to take five hours.

The equipment is projected to arrive in Siquijor before 6 p.m. on Friday, June 13, with installation and commissioning targeted to be completed within 48 hours.

If all timelines are met, full peak demand coverage is anticipated by June 15, effectively ending the rotational brownouts that have affected households and businesses across the island.

Local officials and residents welcomed the update, hopeful that the timely arrival and installation of the generators would restore a stable power supply in the province. | PND

PBBM to civil servants: Be heroic, be accountable in daily work

12 June 2025

To honor the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday urged all civil servants to embody heroism in their daily duties.

The President called on public servants to uphold accountability through delivering prompt, quality service.

At the same time, the President warned that public officials and employees who abuse their authority, misuse their position, or neglect their responsibilities will be held accountable.

“Tayong mga kagawad ng pamahalaan, mga tagapagmana ng kalayaan, huwag nating sayangin ang pagkakataon at tiwalang ipinagkaloob sa atin. Pananagutan. ‘Yan ang sigaw ng sambayanan,” President Marcos said in his speech at the 127th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence and “Parada ng Kalayaan 2025″ held at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

“Papanagutin natin hindi lang ang mga umaabuso sa tungkulin, maging ang mga nagkukulang sa paglilingkod,” the President added, stressing that the government must ensure that the daily needs of Filipinos are addressed.

President Marcos said what the people demand is real action and speedy, quality service from the government and its frontline agencies.

“Mula sa sirang tulay, kalsada, mahal na pagkain, kakulangan ng kuryente—ang nais ng taumbayan ay tunay na pagkilos at serbisyo. Ang solusyon ay ang pagpapaginhawa ng buhay ng bawat isa,” the President said.

“Bilisan ang pagtugon sa pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan, taasan ang kalidad ng serbisyo, at iwasto ang ating pagkukulang,” added the President.

President Marcos emphasized that freedom can be better enjoyed if there is food on the table of healthy Filipino families and dignity in their lives.

“Dahil mas madadama ng Pilipino ang kalayaan kung may pagkain sa hapag, may maayos na transportasyon, may gamot para sa mga may sakit, at may dignidad ang bawat manggagawa.” | PND

12 June 2025

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday paid tribute to the country’s national heroes, honoring their sacrifices and legacy as the nation marked the 127th anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.

President Marcos recalled the first time the Philippine flag was hoisted in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898, which signified the declaration of Philippine independence from Spanish colonial rule.

“Ngunit bago pa man dumating ang araw na iyon, maraming buhay ang naialay, pamilyang nagkawalay at kinabukasang nasira makamit lang ang kasarinlan,” President Marcos said in his speech during the “Ika-127 Anibersaryo ng Proklamasyon ng Kalayaan ng Pilipinas at Parada ng Kalayaan 2025,” held at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

The President said the Republic of the Philippines was built on the hard-won sacrifices of its heroes who laid the foundation for the nation’s independence.

| PND

President Marcos: Bagong Pilipinas enhances country’s freedoms

12 June 2025

With Bagong Pilipinas as the guiding vision, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized on Thursday that Filipinos enjoy the freedom to express their opinion while apathy to the nation’s needs is the true enemy of freedom.

“Ngayon, malaya nating naipapahayag ang ating saloobin nang walang kinakatakutan at malayang nagagawa ang naisin ng walang iniiwasan,” President Marcos said in his speech during the 127th “Anibersaryo ng Proklamasyon ng Kalayaan ng Pilipinas at Parada ng Kalayaan 2025” celebration.

President Marcos said that under Bagong Pilipinas, Filipinos are encouraged to voice their opinions and criticisms which guide the government in further improving public service.

“Dahil sa Bagong Pilipinas, hindi kasalanan ang pagbibigay ng opinyon. At lalong hindi mali ang kritisismo. Bagkus, ito ang nagbibigay buhay at kinang sa ating demokrasya,” the President said.

The President said Filipinos should always care for, guard, and fight for freedom and democracy as well as love for one’s homeland.

“Dahil ang totoong kalaban ng kalayaan ay ang pagiging manhid. Manhid sa hinaing ng taumbayan. Manhid sa kalagayan ng ating kapwa. Manhid sa kapakanan ng ating bansa,” stressed President Marcos.

Under gray skies punctuated with slight drizzle, the President led the Independence Day celebration and parade at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila with thousands of spectators and attended by Cabinet secretaries, foreign diplomats, government employees, school officials and students. | PND
